Held and Holding, Hilary Greenstein. 52 x 30 inches. $2125
about the artist:
The femme figures in my paintings are based on vintage photos, awkward pinups, and vernacular photography. I mine our collective, intimate histories for protagonists I can paint into hyper-saturated abstract spaces. In contrast to art’s history of making the female body known, I use painting to blur lines between reality and fiction, care and harm, self and other. I use paint for its veiling effect, for its ability to seduce while resisting easy answers. My figures embody, tease, and embellish femme experiences painted into incomplete spaces outside time, where layers of dimensionality and flatness defy direct narratives. In this transformation I am looking for new ways to order relationships between bodies (and gazes) in space. Through the blurring of subject, object, space, and surface, I find myself piecing together human behavior and interior realities.
