about the artist:

Rubenstein (she/zey) is a visual artist working in traditional media such as ink; gouache; oil paint; and more recently, collage. Rubenstein explores themes of trauma, mental illness, and chronic pain; zey are interested in how those experiences shape our relationship to our bodies. One of Rubenstein’s newest collections of works titled “Shmita” features the Jewish artist’s exploration of rest and rejuvenation in the context of ancient cultural practices. The collages were created during the artist’s 2021 residency with Elsewhere Studios in Paonia, CO. Using a combination of tools including a vintage Phaser fax machine, cut paper and paint, Rubenstein utilized cut-up xeroxes of her personal ink drawings and sketches to create work at the intersection of abstract and figurative images, where form and shape combine and collapse into each other. Utilizing collage in zeir painting practice has helped the artist become more inventive with form and composition.
